Apostolos
Byzantine Epistle Lectionary
Bishop Joseph Raya and Baron Jose de Vinck
Alleluia Press, 2004, New Hardcover, 547pp.
O God, You granted me retribution
And made peoples subject to me
And saved me from my raging enemies.
Therefore, I will proclaim You,
O Lord, among the nations.
And I will sing praise to Your Name.
Foreword
The present edition of Apostolos, or Byzantine Rite Epistle Lectionary, compiled originally many years ago by Archbishop Joseph Raya on the basis of the Confraternity Text for which he had received permission, has gone through several revisions before publishing. The editor and publisher, Doctor Jose de Vinck, has carefully checked the text to make it conform with the Greek variants. The personal pronouns have been changed from the "thee," "thou," etc. to the modern "you" and "your," etc. Also, many obsolete words and expressions of the Confraternity version have been brought up to date to make the text conform more closely with contemporary American speech, while carefully preserving the meaning of original Greek. Quotations from the psalms have been coordinated with the text of Byzantine Daily Worship, published by Alleluia Press in 1969.
The selections are offered according to the Greek and Melkite tradition, with addition in italics of Slavic usage, so as to make the book useful to all English-speaking Byzantine Rite churches. Father Alan Borsuk, of Passaic Eparchy, contributed the notes on Slavic variants.
Particular attention has been given to the production of a text that is harmonious and easy to read aloud.
The same care has been given to this book as to our earlier text of the Altar Gospel. It is offered with a wish for the unity of all Christians, particularly the different branches of the Oriental Rite, in the love of truth, in the love of beauty, and in the love of our Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ, and of his Mother, the All-Pure Theotokos.
